Orthodontics Dental Technologies
Orthodontics or orthodontic treatment with braces has undergone a technological
revolution. New materials and techniques are constanlty
being developed that now orthodontic treatment less noticeable,
more comfortable and in certain cases reduce
orthodontic treatment timing as well as making it more cost effective.

Direct
Bracket Bonding
In the past, individual bands were used to secure orthodontic
attachments. While the bands usually made of stainless steel were an effective method, this created the “tin
grin” look that was unappealing to many.
With todays new orthodontic bracket bonding techniques as well as new typed of self-ligating brackets (such as Damon braces), brackets are now less
noticeable in terms of size and thickness. |

Titanium Archwire
Another innovation in orthodontic treatment are the titanium archwires that joins the brackets to provide the required force. The titanium archwires are sometimes called “Space Age” wires becuase the wires was developed through the
NASA space program and are made from resilient metals
that allows for more flexible and retain a pre-formed
shape.
These titanium wires are easier for orthodontists to apply
with fewer wire replacements This means that having reduced number of visits for wire adjustments, less
discomfort to patients and shorter treatment time.
Among a variety of materials, BIDC dental center also uses
the Unitek Nitinol Archwire system. These archwire
systems provides the linear elasticity and bendability
of high strength steel. The Unitek Nitinol Heat
Activated archwire thermally activates super-elastic
archwire. To date, only nickel titanium can deliver
the elastic working range making it easy for the
Nitinol wires to engage and delivers the light
continuous forces that effectively move teeth.

Clear Brackets
Clear brackets or tooth-colored brackets are rapidly gaining in popularity due to its less visiblity trades. Clear brackets are more aesthetically
appealing. They are available in translucent
white that blends with teeth-color shades or in a clear,
transparent material that enables the natural color
of teeth to be visible through the brackets. Clear braces can boost the patient’s
self-esteem and help eliminate the self-consciousness
that may be associated with conventional metal braces. |
 |
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces enables complete “obscurity” for patients who do not want people to know that they are wearing braces or having orthodontic treatment. Lingual braces
are placed on the internal surfaces or the back of the teeth making the braces hideen.
Lingual braces are suited for professionals such as
lawyers, doctors, celebrities and sales representatives. Lingual braces should be performed by orthodontists specializing in lingual
braces technique in ensuring successful treatment results and it is thus important to check on the qualifications of your dentists as the forces and technique applied may differ from having conventional braces done. |

Functional
or Removable Appliances
Considerable publicity has been given to functional or removable appliances or removable braces such as Invisalign and Essix braces. Conventional
braces place pressure directly to teeth. Functional
appliances are used in different ways. Some are
intended to influence growth of the jaws in order
to effect changes in facial structure. Some are
used to retain teeth in the corrected positions.
They also are often used prior to and in conjunction
with conventional braces. With today's concepts, removable appliances such as Invisalign clear aligners are now being used to align mildly crooked teeth. Again,
functional and removable appliances are not applicable to all
cases and whether these appliances are suited for an individual should be checked with your certified orthodontist.

Colorful Bands
and Retainers
The small rubber bands or o-rings,sometimes also referred to as elastics now come in colors from neons to pastels or clear bands. Individuals who place braces can change their elastics to coordinate with their
outfits, or they can be festive for holidays.
Retainers, usually worn after the braces are
removed, can also be personalized and made in
colors other than the traditional roof-of-the-mouth
pink. |
